A Forgotten Market

March 6th 2010 03:18
The inventions that sell the best are the ones that appeal to a large crowd. Computers are almost in every household. Everyone enjoys listening to music, so they buy iPods. But there's one market that's... left out. One that could be utilized to make millions. Why hasn't it been used?

The market I'm talking about is the teenage market. Well... that's not quite specific enough. Teenage students. Still not specific enough. Teenage students who take TESTS. Almost, but not quite there.

It's a market involving Teenage Students Who Take Tests But Are Unprepared But Still Desperately Need To Pass. Or the "TSWTTBAUBSD."

I don't know if there are any laws against making a product that assists someone in cheating. But a product that can help a student pass could sell very well. Something as simple as a mirror on a stick would be bought by thousands across America. Pens that have a storage compartment for a couple notes. Watches that have a programmable scroll screen. The possibilities truly are endless. And considering the amount of kids in America that cheat, the market's HUGE.

I'm not encouraging cheating. Heavens, no. I'm a true believer in academic honesty. But there are many others, with the greed for money, who wouldn't think twice about the idea if it would bring him cash. However, there are flaws in this plan. However however, these flaws can easily be outmaneuvered.

FLAWS

1) Parents wouldn't approve of this.
Solution: But at the same time, they don't approve of drugs either. By the last year of high school, over 55% of students have tried an illegal drug. That means they got their hands on several hundred, if not thousands, of dollars to get high. Without their parents noticing. Do you really think the parents would notice if their child bought a "special" pen that was worth 3-5 dollars?

2) Lawsuits. People can sue for plagiarism or one of those other fancy words for "cheating"

Solution: Have a big ass column in fine print saying what the buyer can/cannot do. Somewhere in there, write "This product is just a joke. Don't actually use this to cheat. If you do, we played no part in this. You have to face the consequences yourself." Teens never read the fine print anyways.

3) Consequences of getting caught. A student that realizes what would happen if they were caught with one of these would stay far away from this.

Solution: Face it. Only the smart kids will think this far ahead. And the smart kids are the ones that don't need to cheat.

4) Teachers may catch on. They might know which products students are using and look for them.

Solution:
Use this to your advantage. Release the slightly modified "new" and "improved" product to make even more money. If you use the same product too often, the students will get caught.
