One Reason to get the iPad

February 7th 2010 02:09
Question: Why should I get the iPad?
apple

Answer: You shouldn't. But in case you already are, and are in need for an excuse to tell your friends, I'm here for you. I'll give you one reason that will blow away all of your friends who are less techno-savvy.

The answer: 3rd party applications. Remember when the iPod touch first came out? It sucked. Well... ok, I'm being too harsh. But it was depressing. The first ever touch screen portable device, and its capabilities were strongly limited. But now, with the addition of the App Store, its sales are still booming. The iPod Touch can do so many things an ordinary MP3 cannot. But before the app store, there was jailbreaking. And I guarantee some 35 year-old loser who lives in his mother's basement and doesn't know what a "girl" is, will hack the iPad.

When the iPod was hacked, it was like Moses split the Red Sea. So many apps, so many games. GPSphone allowed you to play GBA games... at a higher quality than the actual game boy advanced. Why was this possible?
Memory Needed:

GBA ROM: 8MB
iPod Touch: Minimum 8GB... 1000x more memory

Processors Used
GBA: 16.8MHz
iPod Touch: 400 MHz... 23.8x more MHz

So where does the iPad stand?
Minimum memory: 16GB ... 2x as much as an iPod Touch
Processor used: 1GHz (1000MHz)... 2.5x as much as an iPod Touch

People say the iPad is an iPod Touch on steroids. Well what happens if you give a Game Boy Advanced steroids? Well... you get... THIS.

PSP
Playstation's PSP...
Nintendo DS
...or the Nintendo DS

A PSP uses a processor that maxes out at 333 MHz... Its games are easily downloadable... An iPad and a PSP is a hacker's dream

The DS uses a dual processor system that maxes out at 67MHz and 33MHz. Since the iPad only has one processor, this may not be possible right away. We may have to wait for the 2nd generation iPad.

That's all for today's episode of "Techpoke". So what do you think? Will you get the iPad?

I love a good tech poke, and I'd love an iPad, but wisdom dictates that I wait for the second generation, just look what happened with the first iPhone.

A good reason but NO USB or Flash support - bad mix for the IPad

I hate spamming and if you don't like it delete the comment but my reasons are HERE for not buying it.

Katy: Wise choice. I have a friend who works for apple and has tested the 3rd gen iPad. It has over 120GB and a dual processor thats runs much faster, although he didn't get the exact numbers. so waiting... would be a good idea.

Jason: Those reasons will be resolved - eventually. Like I said, the future generations seem to have high promise. I would wait for them. And I'm fine with advertising on my site, as long as you don't link it to something completely irrelevant.
