Technology in Sports?

May 2nd 2010 01:24
With technology advancing everyday, you have to wonder where you draw the line. Is there anything you shouldn't use electronic devices for? Like sports. Hockey and Football have the instant replay available. But Baseball only allows it for home run calls. But how limitless can technology be?

For example, could it one day call balls and strikes? It has been done before; a man invented a device for that purpose. There was a motion detector placed underneath home plate so when a ball passed over it, the umpire would be notified. All the umps had to do was call if it was too high or too low to be a strike. But there was a flaw. Since it was a motion detector, it would call a strike if anything passed over the plate, including a glove, bat, person or even a bird. So the solution was to make it a metal detector and place a chip within the ball. Now each ball costs over $200 and can't be hit too hard or it risks losing the natural balance. Technology does have its weak points.

One major question is how the technology would be applied to different levels. What would you do for a little league game? The NFL has a the instant replay, but high school football doesn't. So what do you think? Which sports do you think technology should be used?
